What it is

Herb oil on a hob means a pan, a thermometer and an hour of watching. Too hot and the garlic fries and turns bitter. The Herb Lab does the watching: 100 °C for an infusion, steady for two to three hours, then a beep.

Everything happens in one 350 ml borosilicate glass with a sensor built into it. When the infusion is done, the filter set strains the herbs out and the pipette doses the oil. For alcohol tinctures, such as vanilla extract, the condenser catches the alcohol vapour and turns it back into liquid, so it does not hang in your kitchen.

It is smaller than a sheet of A4 and runs on 74 W. No gas, no open flame.

Why it made the cut

The NOIDS Herb Lab turns kitchen and garden herbs into infused oils, butters and tinctures at home, without gas, flame or solvent fumes. Electric, holds its temperature within 1 °C, and takes up to 30 grams of herbs a run.

Which one to pick

This is the whole kit, condenser included. If you already own a Herb Lab and the condenser is worn or lost, you only need the replacement condenser. For storing what you make, a Terp Seals glass jar keeps dried herbs from losing their smell between batches.

How to use it

  1. Put dried herbs in the glass, below the MAX mark, and add your oil or butter.
  2. Fit the sleeve and lid, and press the glass down into the base until it touches the probes.
  3. Turn the dial to Oil. It beeps after 3 seconds and starts heating.
  4. When it beeps again, lift the glass out, fit the filter set and strain.
  5. Cool, bottle and keep the oil in the fridge.

Questions

What can I make with it?
Herb oils (rosemary, thyme, basil, chilli), herb butter, and alcohol tinctures such as vanilla extract. Anything you would otherwise infuse in a pan on a low flame.
How long does a batch take?
An oil or butter infusion runs 120 to 180 minutes at 100 °C. You set it and walk away; it beeps when it is done.
How long does homemade herb oil keep?
Keep it in the fridge and use it within 4 days, whether the herbs were fresh or dried. That is the rule Oregon State University Extension gives for homemade flavoured oils.
Is it hard to clean?
No. The glass and the filter set go in the dishwasher. The base only needs a damp cloth.
Does it make butter from cream?
No, it is not a butter churn. It infuses butter or oil you already have with herbs, at a steady 100 °C. To turn cream into butter you need a churn or a mixer.
How much does one batch make?
Up to 350 ml in the glass, with up to 30 g of herbs.
